Sustainable Design

The first key element in green building is design. Good design can lower power bills, reduce water consumption, provide healthier indoor environments, and extend the life of your home. We can assist in designing your home to meet the most stringent green building certification available today, LEEDŽ for Homes. A LEEDŽ AP will work with you in determining individual needs throughout the design and construction process. The U.S. Green Building Council tests professionals for their thorough understanding of sustainable building practices and principals; these professionals are known as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional. To learn more please visit http://www.usgbc.org/leed/. Adaptive Builders offers one of the only LEEDŽ AP in Highlands County, so owners can have the confidence that their homes will meet the highest levels of sustainability.

Interior Design

The interior environment is our home, a time for family and friends. We want to create a home for you that is inviting, comfortable, and sustainable. Our designer can work with you to help in accomplishing the home of your dreams. Remember, you do not have to sacrifice style for sustainability. We also strive to use construction methods and materials that improve indoor air quality and reduce toxic and volatile organic compounds, potentially hazardous substances that offgas from certain construction materials.

Windows and Doors

Only the best windows and doors are installed in our homes. The windows are vinyl or aluminum, insulated double payne, and we include low-e for optimal energy efficiency. All exterior doors have pvc or composite jambs to eliminate rotting that can occur at ground level. The doors are insulated steel or fiberglass to allow for the highest R-value available. Our sliding glass doors are also insulated, double payne, with vinyl or aluminum frames. Windows and doors are important areas to consider when building energy efficient homes, so we use the best.

Better Insulation

Concrete block homes are generally insulated with 1/2" foam board on the inside. We go one step further and and insulate the block cells with a foam material called poly-master; see more at http://www.polymaster.com. This adds an R-11 insulating factor and accounts for a 45-50 db noise loss. The underside of the roof decking is also sprayed with foam. This does two things; it provides a thermal and vapor barrier and it can significantly improve the attachment of roof sheathing to trusses and rafters. Recent research at the University of Florida found that three inches of foam sprayed between framing members provided a threefold increase in uplift resistance.

Energy and Water Efficiency
Buildings in the U.S. consume more than 30% of our total energy and 60% of our electricity annually. The design process and quality of construction can significantly reduce energy and water consumption. Adaptive Builders addresses this by including solar water heaters as standard features in our homes. The plumbing fixtures are low flow water closets, showers, and faucets. We offer composting toilets and waterless urinals as well for those interested. Landscaping is designed to the local climate and the site's micro-climate. All appliances we provide are energy star rated. A well designed building is estimated to reduce energy use by 50% to 80%.
